On Wednesday, scheduled talks between the negotiating teams for the Dalhousie Board of Governors and Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) with the aid of a government-appointed conciliator concluded without an agreement. If the parties are not able to reach a deal, it is possible there could be a labour disruption in mid-August.  

This does not necessarily mean a labour disruption is going to happen. No one at Dalhousie wants this outcome, and that includes the negotiating teams for both sides at the table. We remain hopeful an agreement can be reached, and the negotiating teams are expected to meet with the conciliator at least once more before any action is taken. 

That said, in the coming weeks, you can expect to hear more from the university about strike preparations, including implications for the start of the fall term, access to campus, research, and other areas of our operations. We know this news will likely cause stress and worry for many students, including those set to arrive at Dalhousie for the first time, as well as for faculty and staff, their families, and our broader university. These preparations do not mean a labour disruption is inevitable or unavoidable — we will continue to do what we can to support reaching an agreement at the table.
